Galatians 5:1, NET
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

Pray that the Mahar people will seek and find the Christ who alone can set them free from sin and death.

Mahar People

by WK

(This story illustrates attitudes of this people group.)
“Buddha has set us free!” said the teacher to the children in his classroom in India. “Let me tell you about Dr. Babasheb Ambedkar, the one who convinced our people to convert to Buddhism in 1956.” A boy raised his hand and asked, “Are we really free? What will we be like in the next life?” The teacher thought for a moment and spoke. “That’s a question no one can answer, not even Buddha.”
The Mahar, like most people groups in India, were originally Hindus. They were considered untouchables and were not allowed to enter Hindu temples. It was clear that Hinduism had little to offer them. They often worked at jobs that were considered unclean. During the British colonial period many Mahars served as soldiers in the British army. After independence in 1947, Dr. Ambedkar became their leader. In 1956, shortly before he died, he convinced most Mahar to convert to Buddhism. Today only a few Mahar remain Hindus. Almost none of them follow Christ.

Ask God to break the hold that Buddhism has on the Mahar of India. Pray that this people group would develop a hunger to know the true God. Pray that a mission agency would be led by God to target this people group for outreach.
