Greg went on to Wheaton College where he met Sally, a pre-med student preparing to serve in Pakistan or Egypt. Greg sheepishly admits he had no awareness nor concern for people living outside of the U.S. until in his second year at Wheaton when he was coerced to attend an all-night prayer meeting led by 20-year-old George Verwer. “What country are you claiming?” demanded Verwer. “What’s left?” Greg responded. “You’ve got Libya!” Verwer thundered. That night Greg accepted the call to join God’s team to Muslim peoples.
Together with other students, Livingstone and Verwer founded Operation Mobilization (OM) in 1961 and ministered in Europe until 1970. Years later Greg helped recruit 70 “tentmakers” (Christians who can do secular jobs) to get into Libya. When he finally got to his calling in Lebanon, as a team leader he clashed with the country’s leader. Verwer decided Greg was more useful as a recruiter, so he sent the Livingstones (he was now married to Sally) to Toronto to birth OM in Canada.
“Over the years, I gradually realized that the Great Shepherd has chosen to utilize me most often as a sheepdog…. I’ve been a recruiter, one who keeps God’s sheep moving in the direction of his not-yet-harvested fields.” Thus Livingstone summarizes his 52 years of ministry helping place about 1,900 adults into long term residential church planting among Muslims.
