Matt. 3:9
And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

John the Baptist was not the kind of man who minced words. After calling the crowd a “brood of vipers” (3:7), he went on to harshly scold them for thinking that their Jewish heritage was the source of their relationship with God. Isn’t it easy for Muslim peoples like the Bezhtas to fall into the same trap today?

Pray that the Bezhta people will soon understand that their standing before God is based on a relationship to Christ, not their bloodline.

Bezhta People

“It was an absolutely astounding happening when my people received the Gospel of Luke! It was the very first printed book ever available to us in our own Bezhta language. What a book it is!” A Bezhta translator for the Institute for Bible Translations was expressing his joy to a visitor. “My Bezhta language is related to the language of the neighboring Avars. However, our languages are different. If we want to talk or write, we are forced to learn Avar. Many of us have kept our language because we live in the isolated mountain villages where we farm and keep our animals. We are now one of about 20 languages in Dagestan that have a written form of our own. Almost all of us are Muslims and we knew almost nothing about Jesus. This is what makes our first book so wonderful. Now we are learning a better way to live through His teachings!”

Today, after hundreds of years, the 6,000 Bezhta Muslims continue to practice an Islam that blends in pagan practices. Most of them have not known anything about the teachings of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke is opening previously closed doors.

Pray that this translation will soon lead to the JESUS Film being dubbed into their language. Pray that the Bezhta people will know and accept the Living Lord. Pray that many Bezhtas will have believers to help them develop a strong Christ-honoring fellowship able to witness to the neighboring Muslim groups.
