John 13:34
A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Jesus really knew how to set the bar high! We must love one another like He loved us. How can anyone love us like the Lord? We know from later verses that this can be done, but only with the power of the Holy Spirit, the “counselor” (14:17) that came on the day of Pentecost. When you think about it, only the true, devoted, unconditional love of the Lord can draw men to Him. As I Corinthians 13 points out, we can do all the right things, but without the love, it will be meaningless. The unreached people groups have experienced religion, but they haven’t experienced the love of the One True God.

Pray that the love of believers will lead the Archins and other Muslim peoples to the foot of the cross.

Archin People

“One thing I treasure is this beautiful prayer rug that belonged to my grandfather. After prayer my grandfather put inside the rug his small beautifully embroidered bag with perfume herbs, his coral beads and his small comb for his beard.” Tatiana was sharing about her life as an Archin living in Dagestan, Russia, with an Avar rug dealer. “Ever since the roads were put in by the Russians life has changed for us Archins. The peaceful days of shepherding, weaving and farming have been interrupted by pressures from the government. We are not even recognized as a people, but are told we are Avars. I know most of us can speak and write in Avar, but we still talk in Archin. We do not want to lose our culture and life.”

Approximately 2,000 Archin-speaking people live in the remote mountain region of southern Dagestan. Erosion of their land, political changes and pressure to change their language to Avar are threatening their identity. Some have left their villages and assimilated into surrounding Avar regions. These people are strict Sunni Muslims. They have not been open to Christianity, although as a people they were cultural Christians until Islam penetrated their land in the 10th Century.

Pray that the Archins will be touched by believers in Dagestan, be able to read the Bible in Avar (their second language) and not be drawn into the radical Islamic movement that is threatening their region.
