Exodus 22:16
If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride price, and she shall be his wife.

Responsibility. That is key to what God expects from His children. Even though the man in this possible scenario acts wickedly and irresponsibly, he must take the girl to be his wife, and take responsibility for her the rest of his life. In other words, God wants us to take care of those we wrong rather than allow them to pay the consequences.

Pray that Zhaba men will soon learn to take life-long responsibility for their actions. Pray that they will learn that the God of creation knows what is best, and begin to follow His ways.

Zhaba People

by EJD

The Zhaba people are a maternal people, meaning that the mother is considered the head of the family. The women are the ones responsible for tending to housework, for farming and raising stocks, while the young men take care of their siblings. Until recent years the Zhaba people remained largely isolated; however the construction of the Sichuan-Tibet highway has paved the way for exchanges with the outside world.

In spite of the exposure to the world some of their unique customs have remained unchanged. One of them deals with the manner in which a boy proves himself worthy of the girl he has “fallen in love” with. He is to scale the wall of her house, enter her room through the window and then he is allowed to spend the night with her. The boy is expected to return to his mother’s home by daylight. A child who may be born to them is taken care of by the girl. The boy and the girl are not expected to remain faithful to one other. Even as early as the 13th century the famed explorer Marco Polo made observations about the promiscuous nature of the Zhaba people. Sadly, there is a price they pay for their lifestyle; a survey indicates that nearly 50 percent of the population has venereal diseases. Perhaps even worse is the fact that children are raised without the guidance of both father and mother.
