This law, built into Israel’s constitution, demonstrated God’s concern for those who want to become part of His family. Repeatedly He warned against the temptation to mistreat those who were not part of their group. God has always wanted His people to reach out to those from other people groups who desire to learn and follow His ways.
Father, alert us to the “aliens among us” who come from all over the earth. Show us how to welcome these immigrants, refugees, international students and businessmen in a sensitive manner, so they may learn to love and worship the God of heaven and earth.
Who knows for sure where the name Varendra came from? It may be a reference to 12 kings of old. Or it may be a reference to a marshy region where they may have originated.
The 4,000,000 Varendra Brahmins now live in the vicinity of West Bengal. For centuries, these Brahmins have been guardians of the Hindu religion. This means strict adherence to Hindu rituals regarding birth, marriage, death, eating meals—everything in life. There are over 180 million Hindu gods, few of whom are worshipped by the high caste Brahmins, groups that tend to focus on one or two main gods.
Like other Brahmin peoples, the Varendras feel that turning their allegiance to another religion will jeopardize their status. For this reason, there are no known churches or groups of Christians among the Varendra Brahmins. But as yet, no one has thought it possible to allow them to maintain their Hindu culture while turning their allegiance to Jesus Christ alone.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God will raise up workers who will reach out to the Varendras with the Name of Jesus while allowing them to keep aspects of their culture which do not conflict with Christian truth. Pray that the JESUS Film will be utilized significantly among them. Praise God that it is also available in a children’s version.-JR
