After the gospel has been preached to a people group and many have responded in faith, a new fellowship is born. We must remember that some of Satan’s strongest attacks will be directed against this fledgling body of believers. And sometimes, the new church falls away, as it did among the Uighur people at one time. Now the people are entrenched in Islam, and it will be very difficult to direct them to Jesus.
Pray that the Uighur believers will shine like the sun before their Muslim neighbors, as a testimony of His glory in their midst.
“You’re crazy!” shouted the Han Chinese church elder, when asked about evangelizing the Uighurs. This outburst reflects typical Han sentiment toward reaching the Muslim Uighur ethnic group. This Turkic people call the northwestern Xinjiang Province of China their homeland, and the Chinese have persecuted the Uighurs for hundreds of years regarding land disputes. The Uighurs have resisted the religion, language, and culture of the Chinese ever since.
The Uighur people do not share the same freedom that other Muslims in China enjoy. The Chinese government persuaded the Han to migrate into the resource-rich Uighur homeland, where they enjoy economic privileges denied to the Uighurs. The Uighurs have fought back with riots and rhetoric, resulting in 24-hour surveillance and random body searches of Uighurs by Chinese government officials. Once a wealthy and independent group of traders, the Uighurs now face poverty.
Islamic movements executed most Uighur Christians during three historic periods, followed each time by a gradual resurgence of Christianity. The last bloodbath was in the 1930s. Today only about 300 believers exist amongst the 11 million Uighur. But they have the New Testament and Torah in their language, as well as audio and video gospel presentations.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God will stir the 850,000 Christ followers in Xinjiang Province to reach the Uighurs with the gospel of peace. Pray that the Holy Spirit will move in Uighur hearts to exchange their false religion for peace with God in Christ.-LR
