Matthew 3:9
And do not think you can say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

John the Baptist was not the kind of man who minced words. After calling the crowd a “brood of vipers” (3:7), he went on to harshly scold them for thinking that their Jewish heritage was the source of their relationship with God. They believed that their spirituality was based on their ethnicity, rather than on God Himself. In a sense, this is the same spiritual trap that the Tubalar people are falling into. Their spiritual beliefs are being determined by a desire to maintain their culture, rather than a yearning for intimacy with the One who created them.

Pray for the Tubalar people to seek and find their loving Heavenly Father.

Tubalar People

“I saw a grandfather-shaman in my dream. He asked me: ‘Why did you throw away the topshur (lute) that you inherited, and don’t sing eposes?’ That is one of my favorite Atai folk songs. It reminds me of my grandfather who was a shaman. We have a responsibility to our Altai people’s heritage to keep the Ataian throat singing alive so we can converse with the spirit world.” Artemy, a Tubalar Altai, was vividly describing his heritage in an interview for Radio Moscow.

Approximately 1600 Tubalar Altai people live in numerous small villages in the evergreen forest of the Altai Republic of Russia. Though most of them speak Russian, their sagas and songs have been passed down through the generations in their Tubalar dialect, allowing their ethnic identity to remain.

A select number of Ataiain throat singers belong to a group called “AltaiKAI.” They tour the world with their amazing talents that have captivated the attention of thousands of people, some who desire to visit Altai. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDiRySYuka0&feature=related

There are very few followers of Christ among the Tubalars. Revival of shamanism and their spirit worship is beginning to penetrate their lives, especially among the young people.

Pray that Christ-followers among the Tubalars will grow stronger in the Lord and in His Word. Pray that with more Christian contact Tubalar Altai will know the glory of the Creator God and not enter into the darkness of shamanism and spirit worship.
