Colossians 1:5-6
...the gospel... has come to you. All over the world this gospel is producing fruit and growing.

Fifty years ago, it would have been hard to imagine self-multiplying churches in Sumatra, Indonesia. This is a Muslim region through and through. But the Holy Spirit is at work everywhere, calling sinners to repent and accept the good news! People come together to form fellowships of those who have put their faith in Christ.

Pray that Indonesian churches will overcome the difficulties they face in moving out to share Christ with peoples who have never heard the gospel.

The Indonesian Church

by S.P.

Good news, bad news. The good news is that Indonesia’s Christian population is almost 10 percent, which is very good by Southeast Asian standards. The bad news is that these believers are concentrated among a handful of ethnic groups, and the rest are still unreached.

However, over the last 15 years, there has been growing awareness and action among the believing community concerning their neighbors who live beyond the gospel. In 1996, 5,000 Indonesian prayer guides were distributed to 500 Indonesian church leaders at the first local gathering to focus on the unreached people groups of Indonesia. The prayer guide documented the 127 unreached people groups of Indonesia with a population of over 10,000. The prayer guide is now available in Indonesian, English, Spanish and Portuguese. Local leaders continue meeting together and planning how they can reach out to these 127 unreached people groups.
In 1996, only 25 unreached people groups in Indonesia had full-time cross-cultural workers. Today, 101 Indonesian unreached people groups have full-time workers! Two national sending agencies have also emerged with over 250 Indonesian church planters serving among 25 of these unreached people groups. Each year more Indonesian churches and denominations commit personnel, funding and prayers for the unreached people groups of Indonesia.
