Daniel 5:30
That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.

Daniel chapter five gives us a God’s eye view of how easily He can uproot the world’s most powerful empire and replace it with another. It records the first day the Medes and the Persians, the ancestors of today’s Iranians, became a powerful nation. But through it all, the ethnic groups within their realms remained intact.

Pray that ethnic groups like the Talysh tribes will find and embrace the Lord no matter who controls their political destiny.

Talysh Peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran

by JS

Borders come and go at the design of political entities, but people groups remain where they have traditionally lived. Such is the case with the Talysh tribes of northwestern Iran and southern Azerbaijan. These people have lived through invasions and domination by different regimes, and at one time in their history, they were an independent, self-governing state. They have often suffered at the hands of their own rulers, the Turks and the Russians. They have been forced by the Azerbaijani government to fight against Armenia until their huge human losses led to a popular uprising and refusal to serve in the army. Oppression followed. In response, the Talysh people declared their independence from Azerbaijan in 1993, but their independence was crushed.

Historically the Talysh peoples have been farmers and craftsmen. Although they are Shi’ite Muslims, in recent years their women have forsaken the veil and long robe for Western dress. The Talysh peoples still have some vestiges of their pre-Islamic culture with their reverence for trees and groves. Most have never heard the clear presentation of the gospel. In their languages there are no Christian broadcasts, Bible or literature. No mission agency is targeting them for outreach.

Pray for God to raise up prayer groups to stand in the gap for each Talysh tribe. Pray that Jesus will reveal Himself to them in dreams and visions. Pray for medical teams to minister to their needs.
