Psalms 144:3
Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.

Late last year, there was an article in the paper indicating that astronomers believe there are about 300 sextillion stars in the universe. That’s 200 sextillion more than they thought a short while ago. They will probably find hundreds of sextillions more in the years to come. God’s Word puts things in their proper perspective, doesn’t it? He created each of these stars. There is no room for pride before the One who created the galaxies.

Pray that the Shawiya people will put their ethnic pride in its proper place when they consider the works of His hands.

Shawiya Berbers in Paris

by EJD

Bounding up the narrow flight of stairs to his room, 17-year-old Hanafi nervously wondered if his dream of studying his native language, Tamazight, at the university would be realized. Tomorrow he would be taking his Tamazight entrance exam. He had decided to study his native language because he took immense pride in his heritage. Tamazight is the main language of the North African Berbers, also known as the Imaghen, meaning “free and noble men.” Hanafi’s parents were wary about him majoring in Tamazight because they felt he should be studying something more practical that could lead to a better job. But Hanafi was willing to take that chance. His dream for many years had been to study the native language of his forefathers.

Hanafi had inherited from his grandfather this pride in his culture and language. His grandfather, like many Berbers, migrated to France from Algeria subsequent to the close of World War II. He was escaping a chaotic political climate and also trying to make a comfortable living in economically booming France. Hanafi remembers summer vacations at his Grandfather’s house. His grandfather would recount stories about the antiquated nature of their tongue. His eyes would light up when he told his young and eager grandchildren that their language, as they know it, has been spoken for centuries.
