Luke 12:15
Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”

The Shaikhs seek abundance. Their community began as merchants, seeking wealth in lands newly conquered by Islamic armies. Yet there is something starkly missing in their lives. They have material, but not spiritual riches.

Pray that the wealthy Shaikhs will seek and find the spiritual wealth that only Jesus can offer.

“Chiniot, in Indian’s Punjab State, is known as the town of the super rich. Families here are doing business in billions of dollars in Pakistan, India and abroad. Not every resident is entitled to call himself a Chinioti; this is reserved for those who migrated to other places to make a living (usually in business), not those who remained as farmers. Included in this group was the Punjabi Shaikhs.” Mian, a wealthy Shaikh, was explaining his background to some Chiniot businessmen who were interested in doing business with his textile company.

The Muslim Arab army conquered the northwestern Indus Valley from Kashmir to the Arabian Sea in 711 AD. After this conquest there were rich Muslim traders, bureaucrats, scientists, architects, and teachers who migrated to the region. They became known as Shaikhs.

The Punjabi Shaikhs are descended from Muslim Arabs, Persians, Afghans, and Turks. After the independence of India and Pakistan in 1947, most Muslim Punjabi Shaikhs of South Asia’s Hindu majority regions escaped from genocidal Hindu militants and settled in Pakistan. Today many Shaikhs are rich businessmen who are known for their endeavors in industries related to leather, rubber, textiles and public service. Almost all Shaikhs are Sunni Muslims, and a few are Sikhs. There are almost no followers of Christ among the Shaikhs.

Pray that as Shaikhs meet Christ’s disciples in business, they will open their hearts and minds to the Living Lord and seek to know Him and His Word.
