Food and clothing: the list is short when we tally the real necessities of life. Even if we expand this list (e.g., adding shelter, health care, etc.), the list is still much shorter than that of our monthly budget. Today a bottleneck in frontier mission expansion is due to a lack of funding for new ventures. Mission agencies are willing to lead. People are willing to go. But finances are not available. Why? Did God miscalculate the resources needed to accomplish His work? Or have those resources committed to His stewards been diverted to lesser uses?
Pray that we will be found faithful stewards of what He has given us.
Lestari’s hands work so fast that they appear to blur as she mixes ingredients. Sitting on a dirt floor, she blends portions of jicama, young mango, pineapple, cucumber, rice cake, tofu, and tempe. Last of all she blends slices of caribou lips. The Pendalungan people are famous for this dish, “rujak cingur,” as well as fermented rice taffy, vegetables steamed with spices, and skewered meat kebabs. Lestari feels fortunate. Her husband makes woodcrafts that are sold around the world. But many Pendalungans struggle. They have no land of their own. Modern agricultural machinery has forced small farmers off their plots. The Pendalungans also lack access to education and medical services.
The Pendalungan people live in the eastern part of the island of Java in Indonesia (see yesterday’s map). A little over half of their population identify themselves as conservative Muslims. A little less than half practice variations of Islam that are condemned by orthodox Muslims. Sprinkled among them are a handful of followers of Christ. Christian groups from other parts of Java have initiated various efforts to introduce the gospel. Workers with these groups feel encouraged. Still, most of Christ’s followers among the Pendalungan people feel isolated from fellow believers.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for the safety and spiritual anointing of Javanese evangelists who bring the gospel to the Pendalungan people. Pray for Pendalungan believers to grow in faith and in love for other believers and for their Muslim neighbors. Pray that the Holy Spirit would reveal Jesus to Pendalungan leaders.-GEC
