1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

The Oroqen people are willing to curtail their population in the future in order to gain financial benefits today. What a sad, even hopeless state of mind. It is very possible that they will die out as a people and be replaced by the Han Chinese. God has a purpose for the Oroqen people, just as He does for all ethne. Will they ever find it?

Pray that the Oroqen people of northeastern China will find His purpose, and along with it, a hope and a future.

Oroqen People

Why would China’s third smallest ethnic group want to limit births when not required to do so? Does this tribe of 6,000 really want fewer children? The reason is that China’s One-Child Policy certificate gives government benefits not otherwise available to them. China’s One-Child Policy has finally reached Heilongjiang Province’s “People of the Mountain Range.”
Originally hunters, many have left the hunt for farming and other work.

Some fish or raise reindeer. Others have settled in new towns where they find employment. These changes are due to a massive influx of Han Chinese that is rapidly changing Oroqen society. Despite these changes, however, they continue to worship spirits, bears and tigers, whom they consider their “blood relatives.” Totems remain important to them as do shamans.

Traditionally they have had little contact with outsiders due to violence, drunkenness and thievery in their communities. Thanks to changes in China, the Oroqens are now open to tourists, whom they hope will improve their economy.

In 1995, this openness to outsiders resulted in 30 Oroqens putting their faith in Christ when believers from the Daur tribe witnessed to them. Gospel recordings are available to these new believers so they can grow in the faith.

Praise God for the breakthrough in this unreached people group. Pray for the continued spiritual growth of the 30 Oroqen believers in Heilongjiang Province.
Pray for continual interest in gospel recordings among believers and non-believers alike. Pray for further openings and outreach among the Oroqen people.
