Goliath challenged the Israelites to a duel, defying the armies of the living God. But no Israelite warrior was willing to meet the challenge. David had experienced the Lord’s protection in other difficult situations, and he was confident that the Lord would protect him as he volunteered to face Goliath. Today, we need more “Davids” in the frontier missions endeavor, men and women who recognize that the battle is not theirs, but the Lord’s. We need people who will claim the victory that is already won through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Father, grant us courage to confront the enemy of our souls and to overcome our hesitancy and fear.
A visitor to Nuristan asked, “Where did these Nuristani people come from? Some of them have red or blond hair and blue eyes!” Experts, even those from Nuristan, still have no answer.
Nuristan itself is composed of two main provinces of Afghanistan, and is inhabited by about 300,000 Nuristanis. They live throughout five main valleys and numerous side valleys. Inhabitants of each have their own language, often unintelligible to the others. This people group includes farmers, dairymen, and mountaineer herders. The men spend a good deal of time up on the mountains with their cattle, while the women cultivate and plow the fields below. Unlike their sister Afghans, women have never worn the veil.
Nuristan is one of the poorest and most remote provinces of Afghanistan. Providing basic needs of the people is now being addressed through several community development projects. Their most urgent need is to rebuild roads to transport food and supplies.
Nuristanis are devout Muslims today, but they were forced to abandon their ancient religious beliefs in 1895-96 in favor of Islam. There are no known Christians among them. They do have radios, but have limited understanding of the languages being broadcast. Literacy is only six percent.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for faithful development workers in each of their five valleys. Pray for Nuristani Christian radio broadcasts, visual aides, and hearts ready to receive the gospel. Pray for adequate roads so that gospel workers can bring Nuristanis the truth of Jesus.-MH
