Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Jesus pointed to the fact that the gospel will be preached to the whole world as a testimony to all nations. Along with other verses, this one is an indicator that points to the time of His coming at the end of the age. World evangelization surely is the bedrock purpose for which the Lord and His Church are working before He returns. If there was ever a truth to which all mankind will one day be exposed, it is the gospel of the kingdom. Can there possibly be a cause more worthy of our lives?

Pray that His Church will take seriously the command to go to peoples like the Nenets who are suffering without Him.

Nenet People

by EJD

Tamyr woke to the howling of the frigid arctic winds. She hobbled to the stove rubbing her numb palms. Sleep obscured, onerous thoughts came flooding back. Fighting back tears she looked at her husband with pity and contempt. He had staggered home the previous night, like he had every day, his breath reeking of alcohol. In a while he would wake up and before he went to work at the furniture factory in town he would give her a crumpled currency, the meager remainder after his drinking binge.

Years earlier Tamyr had met her husband at school where she, along with other Nenet children, had spent most of their childhood. In a bid to enforce the collectivization policy of the Soviet Union, the government had forced these nomadic people to settle down on permanent farms, and their children were educated in state boarding schools. Tamyr and her husband were not illiterate; however they did not receive the education that would ensure their finding proper employment. They were forced to return to a lifestyle from which they were alienated by a ten-year education in a boarding school.

Besides alcoholism and low life expectancy, the Nenet people also suffer from poverty, both material and spiritual. While they might now have the political freedom and the openness to receive the gospel of Christ, the Scriptures have not yet been translated in their language.
