Romans 8:5
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

Our world abounds in things of the flesh that compete with the things of the Spirit for our attention. Television, magazines, and the Internet—not inherently bad in themselves—often contain material which takes our minds away from the Spirit and onto the things of the flesh. One major reason for this GPD is to help us to set our minds on the things of the Spirit. We daily read of God’s concern for all nations, what He has done in the past for them, what He is doing now, and what still needs to be done to bring the gospel to every one of them.

Ask God to help you keep your mind on the things of the Spirit today—including prayer for unreached peoples like the Somalis.

Muslim Somalis in Houston

by KC

Cra—ACK! The Somali family ran into their Houston apartment. Children were whimpering as their mother urged them into the back bedroom. As it turned out, the sound they heard was only thunder; this is far less threatening than the bombs and guns that many of them had to live with in Somalia. Somalia hasn’t had a working government for many years.

Like many refugees, the Somalis are carrying psychological baggage from living in a land where whoever runs the strongest militia gets whatever they want from those who don’t. These Muslims from the Horn of Africa are fairly new to the Houston area and are in the process of reestablishing their lives in a new world that includes vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens and modern computers. Most have learned how to deal with the technology.

Many Somalis have been in Houston for about 10 years now, and they have dealt with much of the psychological damage that comes from living in a war zone. But they haven’t yet dealt with the spiritual damage which has occurred from centuries of folk Islam. American television hasn’t left them feeling like “Christian” spirituality has anything to offer. After all, they think that the people who write television scripts are Christians.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to move among Houston’s Somalis in such a way that there will be no way to deny the holiness and righteousness of Christ.
