“May the Lord make us keep our promises to each other, for He has witnessed them.”
Those at home never know just how much the missionaries overseas truly rely on their promises to pray. Even when they are sent out to work with a national church, missionaries still have problems of loneliness and culture shock. But when they go to an unreached people, they enter into situations where they are invading Satan’s previously unchallenged territory. He will attack them in many ways beyond the expected culture shock. If those at home who promised to pray for them do not keep their promise, some of these missionaries may experience severe defeat in their personal lives or public ministries. But earnest, continual prayer can make the difference.
Dear Lord, help us who stay to recognize how vital we are in the battle for the unreached. Teach us to pray!
Many people know that Cameroon is one of the few places in Africa that was once a German colony. But did you know that the Hausa people in Cameroon were used by the Germans as spies? The Hausa people who spied for the Germans were traders who traveled extensively throughout Africa. The Germans never managed to extend their colonial holdings, but the Hausa people were already living in many parts of Africa.
How did the Hausa people get spread out so far and wide? It started with their conversion to Islam in the 1400s and 1500s. They made it a point to go on the pilgrimage to Mecca. But an unexpected thing happened on the way to the Kabah: Hausa pilgrims found places along the way to live and trade. Though many of the Hausa people today are farmers, many of them still make their living by trade.
With a population of 23 million, the Hausa people are the largest ethnic group in Subsaharan Africa. Their original homeland is in modern day Nigeria, a place where they retain much political power. Almost 100 percent of the Hausa people are Muslim, though their form of Islam is tainted by spirit worship and other forms of animism.
