Exodus 3:10
“So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

Don’t we wish God’s direction came this clearly all the time! Though Moses was a reluctant servant of God, it was clear what the Almighty One wanted him to do. Sometimes God’s direction comes in subtle ways that we don’t expect or understand. From today’s reading, we learn about Earl Dix whom God directed through a series of circumstances that at first appeared to be misunderstandings. Earl was open to these events being God’s direction. In answer to Dix’s prayer, God provided him with the financial support he needed as a way of confirming his call to Africa.

Pray for a willing heart to obey God no matter what the circumstances.

When Earl Dix returned to the AIM office, he was invited into Mr. Gaylord’s office. Surprisingly, there were several men present. Earl had been mistaken for a missionary candidate! He was really perplexed when Mr. Gaylord handed him a form saying “If you want to be a missionary, you should fill out these papers.” Somewhat in a daze, he filled out the forms, then left. A letter came from the Brooklyn office of the AIM. He had been accepted! He went into the bedroom, laid the letter on the bed and prayed. “Lord, if this is really Your doing, please lay it on the heart of someone to give me a gift, someone I don’t even know . . . . If you do this, I will know you are calling me to the mission field.” Two weeks later another letter came from the Brooklyn office. A friend of the mission had just offered to assume Earl’s full support. “In fact,” the letter continued, “he asked that you be included in the party going out to Africa the last of October.”

God was also preparing Helena Sieler to accompany Earl to the mission field. Earl later wrote, “No bells rang, no whistles blew. Yet the more time we spent together the closer we grew. We genuinely enjoyed being together.”
