Daniel 1:8
But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

God always seeks someone to accomplish His purpose. The darkness of the fall of Jerusalem provided a backdrop for the introduction of such a person. Daniel was a young man, chosen with others to enter the Babylonian civil service. Yet he resolved not to defile himself at the king’s table. His request for an alternate diet was approved, and Daniel began a long career of distinguished service that confronted both the Babylonian and the Medo-Persian Empires with an example of what God can do with a man yielded to His purposes.

Pray that God will raise up “Daniels” from among the Mazanderani people who will obey Him no matter what the cost.

Mazanderani of Iran

by JWS

Between three and four million Mazanderani people live in northern Iran, on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. They live and die virtually untouched by the gospel.
About 50 percent of them maintain a traditional lifestyle; they farm, raise cattle and breed Arabian horses. Some of the women weave carpets. In the mid 1970s, agricultural reform transformed farming into the large-scale production—processing and distribution of agricultural products. About the same time, the oil boom brought profits that were invested in manufacturing farm machinery, equipment and supplies as well as establishing fisheries on the coast. Some of the finest caviar in the world comes from this area.

The Mazanderanis are virtually 100 percent Shi’ite Muslim. They belong to the Ithna-Ashari sect of Islam, and their independent characters make them unique in Iran. According to one source, they are among the most educated and progressive people in the country. The most educated people read and write Farsi, the official language of Iran. However, their heart language, also called Mazanderani, remains unwritten. So there are no Scriptures, gospel tracts or other Christian literature available in their local language. No Christian broadcasts exist and there are no known missionaries—after all, it’s a capital offence to convert from Islam to another religion.

Pray the Lord will reveal Himself to them in visions and dreams. Pray He would give them a spiritual hunger and a passion for the truth. Pray for a Scripture translation team.
