Matthew 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”

The Lobanas are a very influential people. Whatever a Lobana person does is a reflection on their family, their community, and their religious system. In a similar way, Jesus was telling His followers in this verse that whatever they do should have a positive impact on those around them. What would it take to have the “shrewd” Lobana people become “salt and light” to their Sikh and Hindu neighbors?

Pray for Lobana Sikhs to make it their aim to honor Christ with their lives.

Lobana Sikhs

by LMR

What group of Sikhs has an Indian icon called “The Salt of the Earth”?
The Lobana (also Labana) Sikhs shine in history as an influential force in India. Known for their shrewdness in trading, even the etymology of their name testifies to their savvy business practices; Lobana means “salt trader.” Not only were they known as a great salt-trading community, but they also traded other valuables like cattle. Some believe the Lobana traveled to India from Turkey, trading along the way. They won the favor of India’s warrior caste and joined in their battles. In times of peace, they returned to trading. As trading expanded, the Lobana Sikhs capitalized on their skills and watched their economic condition and their upward mobility soar.
Now the wealthy land-owning Lobana Sikhs number more than 350,000 in India. You can see them all over India, though most reside in Punjab. Some have moved to Western countries, where they manage well-established businesses.
The Lobana Sikhs are considered to be among the least reached people groups despite good efforts to reach them. They speak Punjabi, a language that has a full Bible, audio, video, and film resources.
