God hates divorce for many reasons. Not only does it cause bitterness and heartache for those who go through it, but it also taints what He intended to be a reflection of His union with the Church. By giving in to divorce, the Mapillas have cut themselves off from one of God’s ways of demonstrating His love for the Church.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move in Mapilla communities so that their marriages can be what God wants them to be. Pray that they won’t be spiritually satisfied until they have embraced their Heavenly Bridegroom.
The divorce papers have now been signed, and the once married Laccadive Mapilla couple can now go their separate ways. Divorce is common among this people. Over half their marriages end in divorce. Nevertheless, some monogamous marriages between one husband and one wife prevail, in spite of Islamic law which permits a man to have up to four wives. The Mapillas prefer cross cousin marriages, and they usually marry soon after puberty.
The majority of the Laccadive Mapillas reside in Kerala, though some live in other parts of India, including the Lakshadweep Islands off the coast of this south Indian state. There are over seven million people in this group.
The Laccadive Mapillas people of the islands migrated from Kerala around the seventh century. At first they were Hindus, but later they converted to Islam when their women began to intermarry with Arab Muslim sailors. The islanders have kept in contact with the mainland Mapillas through trade and sporadic migrations.
The Bible, the JESUS Film, and some Christian broadcasts are available in the Malayalam language, which is the dominant language of Kerala. Unfortunately, not many of the islanders have responded to the gospel.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for the effectiveness of the JESUS Film and other resources among them. Ask God to use the few Laccadive Mapilla believers and the many believers from Kerala to spread God’s word among this people group.-CN
