Jeremiah 18:4
But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

The Lord sent Jeremiah to watch a potter at work to demonstrate His own sovereignty over the nation of Israel. “Oh house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?” he asks. The Lord can say the same about any nation, since He gave us all life to begin with.

Pray that the Lord will form the Kumhar people into what He wants them to be.

Kumhar People in Sri Lanka

“Our Kumhar people invented the wheel,” Ramesh boasted to his son as they made earthen pottery. He continued to relate other traditions. He told the boy that the origin of their caste came from the beginning of civilization when humans first started to prepare and serve food in clay pots. He told him Hindu myths where the Kumhars are ancestors of Lord Daksha, son of Lord Brahma, one of Hinduism’s three main gods. Ramesh smiled and said, “When our god comes to earth in human form, his first meal will be at a Kumhar’s house. Maybe ours!”

In Hindi, Kumhar literally means “a potter.” These artisans are now exporting pottery around the world. Kumhars live in India and Sri Lanka.

Most Kumhar people belong to Shaivism, the oldest of four Hindu sects. They worship Shiva as the supreme god, the creator and the destroyer. The Kumhar people have all kinds of secular and religious events. These include prayers to various gods, ritual bathing, vibrant folk music, dancing, camel races, and religious discussions.

Pray that the Kumhar people will hear the gospel message from God’s Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the true Creator, full of grace and truth. Pray that the proud Kumhars will humble themselves and allow the Potter to make them into what He wants them to be.
