God commanded Israel to conquer all the peoples of Canaan and to assume possession of all the land. But the years were long and the battles hard, and Israel settled for less. Those nations left unconquered became their snare and eventually their conquerors. So today, when we reject or adulterate God’s commands, our sins become the snares which frustrate God’s blessings to us and through us. In particular, those peoples from whom we withhold the blessings of the gospel may become strong, bitter enemies of Jesus and His Church.
O God, help us not to grow weary in taking Your gospel to those people groups still needing to hear.
Banging sledgehammers and growling bulldozers nearly drown out the worship service as government workers demolish Dushanbe synagogue, the last one remaining in Tajikistan, according to a February article in the “Las Vegas Sun.”
International protests did not stop the destruction; but once the building was flattened, the government granted the small group of Jews permission to rebuild on the same site-at their own expense. Most of the congregation is poor and elderly, so the chances of erecting a new synagogue are slim to none. They have lost their only house of worship.
Jews have lived in Tajikistan for over 2000 years. They trace their ancestry back to Israelites who never returned from the Babylonian captivity after exile in the 7th century BC.
The city’s 150 Jews live in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where 85-90 percent of the population is Muslim. Since February 22, 2006, government regulations for religious groups make it impossible for Jews to gather and worship. Jews in Tajikistan are no longer able to perform acts required by their religion without breaking the laws of their country.
