Daniel 1:2a
And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God.

Tragedy strikes. The chosen nation goes into exile. But in Daniel we also see something exciting happening. Throughout this short book, which contains so many exciting stories and strange prophecies, one message is trumpeted loudly and clearly: God is still on the throne! Five times in succeeding chapters the power of God is displayed in causing powerful leader from both the Babylonian and the Medo-Persian Empires to acknowledge Yahweh’s sovereignty in the affairs of men and nations. God’s intention here is that all men learn to recognize that although the heathen rage, and though the kings of the earth take their stand against the Lord and His anointed, He still reigns triumphant.

Pray that the Lord will teach us to see His sovereign hand behind the affairs of men and nations in today’s world.

Ismailis of Pakistan

by PE

Attackers disguised as street vendors set upon Ismailis as they walk on the streets of their own communities. There are not that many of them, but they are often the victims of violent attacks from Pakistan’s Sunni Muslim majority. In Pakistan, travel warnings include them on the list of the “endangered.” As a result, there is now a freedom movement to declare an Ismaili State in the northern, mountainous areas of Pakistan, China and India. They want complete freedom without ties to what they consider the “fundamentalist, terrorist groups of Pakistan.” The Ismailis are known to be friendly to the West.

The Ismaili people are an offshoot, or denomination of Shi’ite Islam. They are the second largest Shi’ite denomination and are known as Seveners rather than the largest group, which are known as Twelvers (see day 3). The Seveners, or Ismailis, believe that revelation closed with Mohammed, while the Twelvers accept revelation from descendants of Mohammed. Ismailis are more flexible in their spirituality than most Muslims.

Pray for the 2,000,000 Ismaili people of Pakistan who daily live in fear for their safety. Pray that their moderation will allow the light of the gospel to penetrate their hearts. Pray that the Lord will raise up workers to carry His light to the Ismailis. Pray for many to embrace Jesus Christ as their Lord.
