Paul is asking the Jews at this point to examine themselves. They have the Law and the truth, they teach others, and preach, but do they do the things they are telling others not to do? In other words, do they practice what they preach? What if Paul were here today to ask us the same questions? If you bear the name follower of Christ… What does this mean? The name implies submission to the lordship of Jesus Christ and a commitment to His Word. It also connotes an attitude—one that is willing to give up life’s smaller ambitions for the sake of Christ’s global cause.
Pray that the Father may find us to be fully committed believers for the sake of Christ’s glory.
Some articles focus on swim parties with elegant women and delicious food. Others focus on the spiritual aspects of life for Jewish people who fled Iran and now live in places like Queens, NY and Beverly Hills. Whether or not the articles in the New York Times, W, or Atlantic Monthly are exaggerated as some of their readers suggested, the Jewish refugees from Iran are living much better than other refugee populations.
Jews can trace their history in Persia back at least 2,500 years to the time of Persian Emperor Cyrus the Great, who restored the Jews to Jerusalem after the fall of the Babylonian Exile. Many Jewish people remained in Persia for hundreds of years.
Their lives took a change for the worse after the ousting of the Shah of Iran in 1979. The new Shi’ite Muslim theocracy was obviously very hostile to Jewish people, and two thirds of Iran’s Jews emigrated to the United States (http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2010/08/iranian-jews-in-america-torn-between-homelands/62101/). Today there are only about 6,000 Jewish people in Iran. A large number of Iranian Jews in America reside in Great Neck, New York, and Beverly Hills, California. The younger generation is quickly assimilating into American society. The older generation is deeply concerned about events in Iran and the erosion of their Jewish traditions.
Pray that the Holy Spirit will bring an awakening to Iranian Jews in America and elsewhere to the essence of His truth and grace found in Yeshua.
