In this story of the destruction of Sodom, we should learn from Lot, but not judge him too harshly. It is true, he had chosen to live in Sodom. We might think he should have avoided that sinfully wicked place. But perhaps the Lord intended for him to go there to be a light to the people of Sodom. Though Sodom’s citizens, an unreached people group, were lost, apparently Lot was content to let them remain so! We have no indication whatever that he was trying to teach the Sodomites about the One True God. In the end, God destroyed the entire city.
Lord, we pray for those who go by Your command into unpenetrated, unreached people groups today. Give them strength to resist the enemy and to be shining witnesses for Jesus Christ.
A boy becomes a man today! The Brahmin guru gives him a sacred thread, the symbol of the Upanayana initiation. He whispers a special mantra to the boy. The father addresses his son as a man-instead of as a child, for the first time. Now he is “twice-born.”
Is this scene from India? Maybe-maybe not. It occurs all over the world. These are the Brahmins-the holders of the sacred teachings of Hinduism.
By all accounts, they stand at the top of the Hindu social ladder. That helps to explain why “Operation World” can say, “The Brahmins ... despise Christianity because of its links with the Dalit (Hinduism’s Untouchables).”
Why would a Brahmin express interest in the Christian faith? We invite him to become “born again;” the Brahmin believes he is already “twice-born.” Christ has a fellowship of all believers; he refuses to associate with Untouchables. God offers eternal life; as a Brahmin he believes he is on the verge of Nirvana, that perfect state of bliss that only comes after many reincarnations. In his mind, to accept Christ would mean losing it all.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that God would lead educated Christian Indians to reach out to the Brahmins in all parts of the world. Pray that the Holy Spirit will humble Brahmins so that they will accept His guidance.-EF
