Song of Solomon 5:8
O daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you—if you find my lover, what will you tell him? Tell him I am faint with love.

If we were to extend today’s story a couple of years, we would find Benna with his wife doing one of two things. Either he would be ignoring her or beating her. If he did the latter, she might feel “loved” by him. This is the way of the Hamer people of Ethiopia. Contrast this with what we read in Song of Solomon, where lovers are “faint” with love. Also contrast the Hamers way of life with what God’s ideal is for a husband, which is to love his wife and lay down his life for her.

Pray for the Word of God to soon reach every Hamer village and household.

Hamer People of Ethiopia

Sanna kneeled behind her cousin, patiently plating intricate braids mixed with clay, butter, and ocher in her black hair. Today was a special day as Sanna’s brother, Benna, was to become a man and the whole village would be there to celebrate.
Sanna’s brother stood unclothed with the line of boys who would try to prove themselves worthy of manhood and marriagability. When his turn came Benna ran for a line of cows, jumped on the back of the first animal, and jumped from back to back across four of the startled beasts three different times to the cheers and chants of the onlookers. When her brother was done, Sanna shrieked with joy and ran to present a green stick to one of the judges who whipped her back until blood flowed. She would be scarred for life in order to celebrate this day.

Pray for the 73,300 Hamer people of southwestern Ethiopia. Though overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim, they observe many tenets of their ethnic beliefs as well. Ask God for wisdom, favor, and protection for the mission agency now targeting the Hamers. Ask God to strengthen and encourage the few Hamer believers. Pray for them to have the fruit of the Holy Spirit and boldness to share the good news. Pray for the veil to be removed from Hamer eyes so they may see the One whose blood paid for their sins. Pray for a great harvest of Hamer souls to be added to the Kingdom.
