I Kings 18:21
Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

The Chettiars are a people with a pragmatic approach to religion. Like the people of Israel that Elijah confronted, they want to be in good standing with all the gods, Jehovah being but one of them. This is not acceptable to the One who created the universe.

Pray that the Chettiar people will soon understand that the Lord cannot compare with all the other gods of the Hindu pantheon.

Chettiar People

“I am coming,” mumbled Kayelvizhi as she struggled to put on her shoes and gather her books. The nun in charge of the dining room had already rung the bell announcing breakfast. Kayelvizhi made it just in time for the choral “Amen.” Quickly bolting down her toast, she sidled through the maze of neatly set tables toward the door. She was in a hurry to go to the grotto in the convent garden to pray for success in her exams. It did not matter that she had already chanted the Sanskrit slokas earlier that morning. On this very important day she could use the help of all the deities. In her mind the lines separating Murugan, Ganesha, the statue of the Virgin Mary in the grotto, and Jesus Christ of the chapel were murky. They are all gods, and I need their every favor, she thought.

Kayelvizhi’s parents are wealthy Chettiar merchants. The Chettiars of Tamil Nadu are known for their astute business acumen. Hoping to give their daughter a good education, Kayelvizhi’s parents arranged for her admittance at a reputable Catholic boarding school. They were not in the least threatened by the fact that their daughter would be studying in a parochial school. They were only happy that they would have the favor of one more god.

Pray that God in Christ would draw these people to an exclusive relationship with Him. Pray that their eyes would be opened to the uniqueness of Christ.
