Matthew 9:37
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.”

That is just what the CIM was doing! What a time to ask! There was a major depression worldwide, curtailing donations. China was a very dangerous land to work at that time. But the harvest was ripe! Looking back at this time period, we notice that efforts of such missionaries later resulted in a strong, growing Chinese Church that is now sending workers to other fields.

Pray that in today’s depressed economy, that people will first consider God’s purposes and be encouraged when they think of the potential harvest.

The China Inland Mission (CIM) sent a plea for 200 single men to prepare for missionary service. In spite of the political turmoil in China and the global depression, even young women eagerly volunteered. Among them was Betty Scott, Moody Bible Institute student and daughter of Presbyterian missionaries in China.

While at Moody, Betty Scott and John Stam met at the weekly CIM prayer meetings. They were attracted to each other, but the mission’s appeal for workers for the frontiers was more important to them than their relationship. They agreed that Betty should go to China without John, who had not yet been officially accepted by CIM. In the fall of 1931, Betty sailed for the field while John remained at Moody, his heart becoming increasingly burdened for China.

In China, missionaries were suffering persecution at the hands of Communists and bandits. Nevertheless, in the fall of 1932 John sailed for China. He was excited about his future ministry and about seeing Betty Scott again. But she was in the interior, and he was scheduled to study Chinese in Shanghai. To be so close and yet so far from each other would be difficult. When John arrived in Shanghai in 1932, he found that Betty was there convalescing from an operation. Their reunion was the first step to engagement, and a year later they were married.
