Less familiar than the great victory at Jericho is the disastrous defeat at Ai. One of Israel’s warriors, Achan, had coveted and taken some of the beautiful things from the spoils of Jericho which God had reserved for Himself. As a result, the nation of Israel suffered a devastating defeat at the little town of Ai. Every soldier of the cross of Jesus Christ today must guard against the same type of covetousness and greed. It is easy, like Achan, to justify our greed and forget God’s command. Jesus said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).
O Lord, guard our hearts. So fill us with Your purposes, Your goals, Your concern for lost peoples, that other things will take their rightful place in our affections.
Latifa has no country. She has no citizenship. Therefore, she has no job, no property, no basic healthcare, no education, and no ability to obtain a passport and escape her circumstance. She is only one of a million Bihari Muslims living in 66 refugee camps where they have been warehoused since the end of the 1971 war between Pakistan and what is now Bangladesh. They consider themselves Pakistani. But Pakistan does not want them, while Bangladesh considers them traitors since they were on Pakistan’s side during the war.
Trouble sometimes brings reflection. And the despair of poverty and isolation has made the Biharis somewhat more receptive to listening when they hear the gospel. Some have seen the JESUS Film and some are listening to Christian radio broadcasts. There is one small group of illiterate Bihari Muslim women who meet to hear Bible stories and are responding to the call to Christ.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray for these isolated and disowned people, that they may hear and receive hope in Jesus Christ. Pray that they will learn to pray in the Name of Jesus and obtain the authority of the believer, who with faith can move mountains and have the abundant life Jesus intends for them.-PE
