Ecclesiastes 5:10
Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.

It is difficult for Assamese Muslims to not seek wealth wherever they go. After all, they have been denied it for generations. But now wealth is available to some of them. Will they find out that wealth is not all there is in life, or will they be satisfied with mere money?

Pray that as Assamese Muslims pursue and obtain worldly wealth, they will come to understand that they desperately need spiritual riches that only Jesus can provide.

Assamese Muslims

Lifting a bright blue dress to the light, a tourist exclaimed, “These dresses are exquisite, Muneer! I must tell others about your shop. You are from Assam; is that where they came from?” Muneer, a Assamese Muslim replied, “Yes, I have several women from my home town who make them. I’ve been able to do well here in Pune, Maharashtra, and it has helped my family. My sister is also starting a small store in Assam. She was able to get a micro-loan from a bank. These loans are really starting to help us.”

In India’s northeastern state of Assam, there are about 2.5 million indigenous Assamese Muslims and 5.8 million Bengali Muslims. Christians number about 800,000 and the Hindu population is 15 million. Assam’s economic growth has been slow in spite of possessing vast natural resources including oil, natural gas, forest products, coal, and minerals. It has fertile land and plenty of water for agricultural production. The problem has been related to Assam’s lack of economic development among its own people. This has been compounded by the migration of Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh. Outside corporations have controlled Assam’s resources. Recently there has been some improvement with Muslims in Assam developing their own businesses outside and inside Assam. Many of these Muslims are nominal in their faith but very resistant to Christians.
