Proverbs 24:12
“Rescue those being led away to death…. If you say, ‘But we knew nothing about this,’ does not He who weighs the heart perceive it?”

Today millions of people in thousands of unreached people groups continue to be “led away” to death by the evil one. How will we respond? Will we pretend ignorance when we meet Jesus face-to-face? Or, recognizing that He knows our hearts and guards our lives from destruction, will we seek to rescue unreached peoples from a Christless eternity?

Pray that we will remember that we must all appear before His judgment seat. Commit yourself again today to “holding up” the unreached peoples in your prayers, in your financial giving and in the missionaries you send.

Afar People of Ethiopia and Eritrea

“It could get worse,” Ali admits to his wife Fatima. “Already the famine threatens our survival.” Fatima replied, “It is Allah’s will.” Finally, they decide that he will take two of their goats to sell in Djibouti City. From this sale he can purchase a few staples to feed their family.
Though they may not realize it, Ali and Fatima are more fortunate than other tribes in the Horn of Africa region. Their Afar people group lives in the northern section of the famine-stricken region. Most of the Afar people live in Ethiopia and Eritrea. This couple roams between a string of lakes in Djibouti, but the water level for the lakes has shrunk during the current drought and famine. Now they wonder how much longer they can hold out in their native area.
The Afar people typically move from highland to lowland areas in search of water. The growing famine has disrupted this pattern. They carry their houses as they go and reconstruct them at each temporary settlement.
The Afars began converting to Islam in the 10th century. Not only does their Islamic religion offer resistance to the gospel, but the Afar people associate Christianity with the oppressive Ethiopian and colonial governments of the past.

Pray that followers of Jesus in the area will demonstrate His love in culturally relevant ways. Pray that the Holy Spirit will stir the hearts of Afar leaders to follow Christ.
