I Samuel 30:6, NIV
David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.

David had gone from fame in slaying Goliath, to King Saul’s court, to years of living in the wilderness as a fugitive. In this verse he came back from a raid to find that their own village, Ziklag, was wiped out, and their families and herds long gone. To make matters worse, his men were blaming him. Like David, missionaries face serious ups and downs as they serve the Lord.

Pray that whenever the harvesters God is sending to the Songhai Koyraboro find themselves sitting at their own burnt Ziklags, they will strengthen themselves in the Lord their God. Pray that God will respond to them as He did to David, by providing mighty victories.

Songhai Koyraboro People of Mali

by GEC

Ahmed trudged into his father’s square, mud-brick home with liquid mud oozing from his clothes. “Why do you come home with mud?” his father demanded. “The river flooded our school,” the boy explained. “Then clean up in your mother’s room,” father ordered. “She won’t let me enter it like this,” Ahmed replied. “Then remove your clothes by the door, and clean up,” father continued.”

Ahmed and his family live in Gao, Mali. Last year’s dry season lasted longer than usual. Then when the rains came, the Niger River rushed over its banks, damaging or destroying many schools, hospitals, and homes. Some flooding occurs annually. The last two years, floodwaters surged well beyond the flood plain.

This family is part of the once-powerful Songhai people. Specifically, Ahmed’s family is part of the Songhai Koyraboro; the latter term means “city dweller.” Their dialect has become distinct from that spoken in rural villages. Religion remains a unifying element for all Songhai groups. They have identified themselves as Sunni Muslims for centuries, even though their practices include many folk religion elements. Followers of Isa Al Masih (Jesus the Savior) also serve and assist throughout West Africa. Ahmed attends one of the schools operated by these Jesus people.
