Exodus 19:4-6a, RSV
You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my own possession among all peoples; for all the earth is mine, and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

Israel failed to be obedient to this commission. They did not live as a holy nation. They did not obey His voice, or act as a kingdom of priests to the nations. Yet, they are His possession, and always will be! God will always be faithful, though His children may not be. The Church has failed numerous times to follow the commands of God. Peoples who have not yet met Him can likewise fail.

Pray that the Jola Fonyi people will embrace their Savior and obey His voice.

Jola Fonyi People

by JS

A stranger never feels like a stranger when he enters a predominantly Jola village or home! The Jola are a relaxed people and are known for their charm and kindness towards strangers. Family is central to their culture, and all are treated equally while performing their roles in the village. Mostly farmers, the Jola people of Senegal raise peanuts and rice. Husbands are responsible for the cash crops, and wives are responsible for gardening, food preparation, and the care of the house and the children. They are mainly located in southwestern Senegal in the forested region of the Casamance. But herein lies the problem: The Casamance has had trouble with guerilla warfare, and economic activity has been disrupted for decades. The local Jola feel disenfranchised and marginalized in the Wolof–dominated Senegalese capital of Dakar.
Jolas are primarily Islamic in name only because fetishism dominates their lives. They obey Allah out of fear, not love. These people have many medical and nutritional needs, but their main need is to hear and embrace their loving Savior. There are a few fledgling congregations among them, and they do have a New Testament in their language.
Let us pray that respected Jola leaders and village elders will give their lives to Christ and influence their people to do the same. Pray that the medical and nutritional needs of the Jola will be met. Pray that peace will reign in the Casamance Region where many Jola reside.—JS
