Though this verse does not mean that believers never face natural calamities, it does mean that the Lord will be at the believer’s side, so there is no need to fear. This would be very good news to people like the Singkils who live in fear. The Lord can be their protector!
Pray that the Lord will soon be the protector of the fearful Sinkil people of Sumatra, Indonesia.
Do you recall the massive nine-point earthquake of December 26, 2004? It was the one that triggered a series of devastating tsunamis in the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in 14 countries. As Wikipedia reports. it was “one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.” Indonesia suffered the most devastation, and the 67,000 Singkil people of Sumatra were among those affected. Although spared from the tsunami, this people group was affected in other significant ways. Fear spread throughout their community. When another earthquake in nearby Nias Island hit, many Singkil houses were destroyed, but no lives were lost. After that, many Singkil then moved to higher ground.
Traditionally residing in villages along the rivers and in the hills, the Singkil people earn their livelihood through farming and fishing. Some also work as day laborers and craftsmen. Their houses are built on wooden stilts. The Singkil River is important to their daily life; they use it for drinking water, bathing, dumping trash, and transportation. Strong family ties are very important to them. Traditional culture and Islamic laws order their lives, and few would dare to not conform to what is expected of them.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
