John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

The world offers its version of peace, but it is merely an illusion. There is no true peace for anyone who does not put their faith in the One who created them and holds all the nations in His capable hands. Even Christian believers struggle throughout their lives to maintain the peace that comes from true faith. How much more difficult it is for peoples like the Buginese!

Pray for the Lord to give the Buginese people faith in the One who controls their destiny.

Buginese People of Indonesia

“What are you doing?!” the Buginese mother shouted at her daughter. She and her family were sitting together eating their evening meal.

“I’m eating my fish,” the little girl replied with a bewildered look on her face. “You know better,” Mother said, snatching away the plate. “We never eat the other side of the fish before throwing out the bones.”

The little girl frowned. “But why, Mother? What difference does it make when we throw away the bones?” “It makes a great deal of difference,” the father interjected. “It brings bad luck if we eat the fish with the bones.” “I thought bad luck came when we buttoned our shirts starting at the top,” the little girl said. The father nodded. “It does. There are many ways to bring bad luck. That is why we must be very careful.”

Once mostly Buddhist, the Buginese converted to Islam early in the 17th century, but they continue to be very superstitious and very concerned about doing everything they can to ensure that they keep evil away and enjoy good luck. Most of the Buginese live in Indonesia, but more than 10,000 have migrated to Singapore. Wherever they are found, nearly 100 percent of the Buginese practice folk Islam.
