Matthew 2:28
…and he lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

Nazareth in Galilee was considered by the Jews to be the worst part Israel. It was on the very edge of this nation, so the people had frequent dealings with “unclean” Gentiles from bordering areas. Yet because it was located so close to the Gentile peoples, and because it was on the crossroads where many people traveled, Jesus could reach many at a time when travel was rare. Do you live in a place that has low status? Does that mean that God can’t use you or your local church to reach the nations in your own back yard?

Pray that God will show you how to reach the nations, no matter where you live.

Phadah gazed over the green plateau, high in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria. His sheep grazed peacefully in the sunlight while Phadah kept watch on the surrounding horizon. His eye caught a flicker as something ran between the stands of brush. Was it …? No, he relaxed, it was only a small animal. He was grateful that the days it was his turn to watch the sheep gave him rest from the continual attacks taking place in his town of Shawiya.

Centuries ago the Shawiya people fled the sands of the Sahara to the high country. Situating themselves atop inaccessible peaks, they successfully fought off assaults by the Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs. They were finally conquered about 700AD by the Muslims and accepted the religion of Islam. They fiercely maintained their own culture and language, knowing little of the Qur’an. In 1993 the battle for their identity began in earnest and they are now in a battle for their very existence.
