For the past 20 years Chechen nationalists have endured great hardships for the cause of independence. It is understandable that they want to determine their own future, rather than have their nation controlled by others. However, there are much more important reasons to endure hardships! The cause of Christ has eternal rewards!
Pray that the Chechen nationalists will find the love and peace of Christ so compelling that they will turn their attention to His cause. Pray that the Lord will send missionaries to their land to tell them the truth about the wonderful God who created them and wants to be the Master of their lives.
Since the fall of Soviet Russia in 1991, tiny Chechnya has been torn by violence in its struggle for full independence from Russia. Long dominated by other nations, Chechens have a fierce desire to be free to make their own decisions.
Officially they are a semi-autonomous province of Russia, but some consider their president, Ramzan Kadyrov, a puppet of Russia’s prime minister. Kadyrov has brought an uneasy peace to the streets of Grozny, the capital city, by using strong-arm tactics. Beneath the surface runs a current of unrest, ready to erupt into yet more violence. Perhaps to flaunt his power, Kadyrov has prohibited alcohol sales and gambling, and he insists that women in public cover their hair with the hijab, the traditional Islamic head scarf.
Though predominantly Muslim in culture, Chechnya’s urban population is overwhelmingly liberal. Demonstrations express the common people’s displeasure with recently imposed rules. Most ordinary Chechens want independence; but even more, they long for stability, safety, and most of all, peace.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
Pray that the Prince of Peace will reveal Himself to the Chechens in visions and dreams. Pray that this people group will come to know true peace and real freedom in Christ. Pray that they will realize that the most important battle to win is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness.-JWS
