2 Thessalonians 3:1
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.

Paul asked the church at Thessalonica to pray for him and for the rapid spread of the gospel to those who had not heard it yet. That prayer can be ours today. As the gospel has come to us, so let it be our compelling vision to see it spread quickly to people groups like the Huis of China. Just as the gospel reached our people group, it has missed others entirely.

Pray that the gospel message will spread rapidly and be honored among the Hui people of China this very year.

Hui People of China

A “white capped” Chinese Hui man journeyed toward Mecca. A Hui woman in another Chinese province chanted the imam prayers in the mosque she oversaw. A “black capped” Hui man in a neighboring province lit incense with his children during worship. A Hui woman in yet another province shopped with government subsidies for her family’s comparatively expensive Muslim diet.

Distinguished from other Han Chinese peoples, the Hui have higher cheekbones, rounder eyes, and Sunni Islam is their religion. The third largest minority group in China, the Hui people number more than 13.2 million and live scattered in every Chinese province. Their ancestors came from Persia and Central Asia many years ago, marrying Chinese women. Subsequent decades brought genocide against some of the Huis; but later they were given greater freedom and special allowances for their Muslim culture. Hui women are not restricted to China’s one-child policy, and they can hold religious office. Conversions to other religions are rare for the Hui people. About 1,000 are following Christ. Momentum is building, however, with several Hui fellowships forming in recent years, despite persecution. With a complete translation of the Bible, radio programs specifically designed for the Hui, the JESUS Film, and many other resources, Hui believers have many tools available.

Pray that the Hui people will understand that they can follow Jesus while maintaining their cultural uniqueness. Pray that the Han Chinese believers reaching out to the Huis will see a harvest of souls turning to Christ.-LR
