God will build a church from every nation on earth. The Acehnese people have traditionally been among the most resistant people groups in the world to His word. But after the horrible tsunami, the Acehnese people have had the chance to meet Christ followers who want to help them in their time of need. Now they are faced with the choice: continue in their old ways, or recognize the love and mercy of their true Lord.
Pray that the Acehnese people will bow their knees to the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Deforestation threatens a Muslim Ramadan tradition in the Aceh province of the island of Sumatra. The Acehnese people in northern Sumatra boast that they practice the strongest adherence to the Islamic religion in the world. Generations have passed without Christian contact. But their devotion to ancient practices faces a serious threat. Part of their observance of Ramadan includes a nightly communal meal called “Ie Bu Peudah,” where they serve a hot or spicy porridge. Its basic ingredients are rice and an assortment of spices….” These spices become less available as deforestation increases. (http://www.thejakartapost.com/search?search_words=Ie+Bu+Peudah&submit=GO)
Other disruptions have literally shaken the Acehnese people. The devastating earthquake and tsunami of December 2004 had their origins off the Aceh coast. After the destruction of many towns and villages, hundreds of Westerners were allowed into the area. For the first time many Acehnese people met followers of Christ. Some of these encounters led to friendships. As the years passed, a few small groups of believers have begun to profess their faith in Jesus.
Ramadan starts later this month. Acehnese Muslims will gather spices and prepare their “Ie Bu Peudah.” They will share a common meal each evening. But the old people will mourn that the meal lacks some of its crucial spices.Learn more at joshuaproject.net
