Colossians 3:5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

In our sinful human nature all of these things are part of our daily lives. We can’t change this nature, even though we may want to change it. But through the work of the Holy Spirit that comes from His regeneration, Christ can change us! Today we are reading about the results of greed among some of the Lingao people of Hainan Island. Their greed, which God calls idolatry, is an offense to both man and God. Thousands of people could have had jobs if money had not been embezzled by crooked bureaucrats. God will not allow their greed to go unpunished unless they repent. But God can move among them!

Pray for the Holy Spirit to regenerate the Lingao people.

Lingao (Lin-gaw) People

by WK

On the north coast of Hainan Island there are many cars and electronic devices that shouldn’t be there. This is the homeland of the Lingao people group. Corruption is rampant among the Lingao people. Government money that should have been used to develop the tourist industry was embezzled by local officials and used to buy luxury goods, according to Operation China. This people group is considered to be Han Chinese, even though they speak a Tai language that has no written script.
The Lingao people originally lived on the Chinese mainland. They migrated to Hainan after China conquered the island 2000 years ago. Most members of this people group worship nature spirits. Historically, there have been two major efforts to preach the gospel to the Lingao. Jesuit missionaries went to Hainan in 1630, and Danish Protestant missionaries arrived in 1880. These efforts planted the seeds of a current youth revival. While there are 750,000 people in this group, there are only 5,000 believers. However, the good news is that the churches are overflowing with young people.

Pray that the current youth revival would spread to all Lingao age groups. Pray that young Lingao believers will be protected from persecution and used by God to reach their elders. May this people group realize that Jesus Christ is the true source of salvation. Ask God to lead a mission agency to create a written script for the Lingao, so that the Bible could be translated into this language.
