What irony! By human reasoning Jesus appeared to be completely defeated by the powers of hell that drove His enemies to crucify Him. But instead, this barbaric act became a public spectacle of Christ’s power over all demonic forces! Christ’s bloody death is very difficult for peoples like the Yongnan Zhuangs to accept. It is very common in their part of the world to settle for appeasing powers and authorities through rituals like the one we read about today, rather than accept Christ’s total defeat of these same spirits.
Pray that the Yongnan Zhuang people will soon embrace Jesus’ death on the cross as protection from the powers of hell that torment them.
Anxiously looking on, the mother and father awaited the Bu Luotuo’s (animist priest) interpretation of the chicken bones he cast upon the ground. Would their son live? Divination by chicken bones is a common animistic practice among the Yongnan Zhuang people of southern China and northern Vietnam. The parents had heard from a visitor from a neighboring village about a man named Jesus who claimed to be God’s son and lived and died many years ago. The visitor further explained that the stories he had heard told of Jesus healing all kinds of sick people. The parents wanted to know more, but they were so afraid of offending the evil spirits that they first went to their local shaman.
Like other Zhuang groups, the Yongnans are animists, but reports tell of a church planting movement that has started in the last two years that is reaching many villages.
Ministry efforts can be fruitless unless God empowers them. So let us pray that God will anoint those working with the Yongnan Zhuang with wisdom and insight. Pray for God to enable workers to put the truth in a form that can be easily understood by the Yongnans. Pray for the Holy Spirit to penetrate hearts, so that the Yongnan Zhuang people will be convicted of sin.
