There is no shortage of hollow and deceptive philosophies in this world. The unreached people groups that we are praying for this month have been saturated with these for centuries. Today we are praying for the Shui people who have been deceived into thinking that it is a grave insult to their ancestors if they look to Jesus. The results are fear and a morbid mindset. God has something so much better for the Shui people!
Pray for the Holy Spirit to draw the Shui people to the throne of grace. Pray that He will lead them away from hollow and deceptive philosophies so that they can know the King of kings.
This is the moment; this is the time of salvation for the Shui (water) people. This people group formerly lived on the coast, but was forced to flee to the mountains where they now live. They are in the midst of their second chance to find salvation through Jesus.
Decades ago missionaries went to the Shui people and around 5,000 became believers. They were all killed for their faith. Only ancestor worship was tolerated in their close-knit communities, and it is so ingrained that to accept Christ was considered a dreadful insult against those ancestors. They are so focused on death that for more than 2,000 years it has been the custom for women to wear white headdresses for three years if a relative dies. In extended families mourning can be required for nearly a lifetime as relatives die one by one.
The wonderful news is that Chinese believers have gone to the Shui, and there are now 100 Shui believers being discipled. The culture of death is being broken by the light and life of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Pray for the Chinese missionaries who have left every earthly thing to minister love and truth to the Shui people. Pray for boldness, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, and protection as they live out their calling. Pray also for the Shui people who are bound by fear and death. Pray that hard hearts are softened and dull ears are sharpened to the message of salvation, abundant life, and joy in Jesus.
