Once someone from an unreached people group embraces Christ, they often face a hostile community. This is the same community that they have depended upon for their entire lives. It is essential that new believers act both wise and loving towards their communities, even when it means graciously accepting abuse. Though it may hurt their pride and cause emotional turmoil, accepting abuse might be an opportunity to extend His kingdom to unbelieving outsiders.
Pray for believers from the Nung people to joyfully accept abuse for the sake of Christ. Pray that their godly behavior will draw non-believers to Him.
The Highland Nung village tremored with excitement! That day was the lung tung, when villagers would pray to their ancestors and gods for good yields in the community garden. A month earlier a man had arrived to show the JESUS Film in the Nung language. Many had already added Jesus to their ancestral worshipping altar and anxiously awaited His power for the harvest. The shaman prepared the special cake mixed with ash and wine to be offered to the Earth and to God.
Approximately one million Highland Nung people live in large urban centers or small villages on the hillsides of Vietnam close to the Chinese border. The Chinese Nung consider the Vietnamese Highland Nung to be untrustworthy. Highland Nungs are agriculturists who nurture rice fields and orchards.
Nearly 10 percent of Vietnam’s population is Catholic. The Highland Nungs of Vietnam are animistic; only 0.13 percent of them are Evangelical according to the Joshua Project (http://www.joshuaproject.net/print.php?rog3=VM&peo3=14065). For many years mission agencies focused on the Highland Nung people. The JESUS Film, gospel recordings, and Christian broadcasts are available, but they need more Christian literature.
Pray for these resources to be widely distributed in Nung communities. Pray for a complete Nung Bible to be available. Pray that Christian leaders will use discernment in making the gospel understandable for them so that they can learn of God’s wonderful power and love. Pray that the Nung people will put away their traditional gods and follow Jesus.
