Christian workers have flocked to Japan from the United States to help the Japanese people who have lost their homes, their belongings and loved ones due to the tragic earthquake and tsunami. One church in Southern California sent mission teams four times in the summer of 2011 to help clean up the mess, comfort the people, and show the love of Christ to them. Missionaries already in Japan also indicate that the people are more open to the gospel since this tragedy struck the nation. We can have the same assurance that Paul expressed in his letter to the believers in Rome. We can be confident that God will crush Satan under the beautiful feet of those who bring the good news to peoples in bondage.
Pray that Satan’s work in Japan will be crushed, freeing the Japanese people to worship their true king!
There are wrecked buildings everywhere in Fukushima, Japan. The March 11, 2011, earthquake had reduced many buildings to piles of rubble. Then came the tsunami and a wall of water swept inland. Cars were tossed about and boats were dumped far inland. The combined earthquake/tsunami disaster killed 20,000 people, and 125,000 were left homeless, according to Japanese government estimates. It also damaged a group of nuclear reactors in Fukushima, causing the release of radioactive water and gases. Now the soil is contaminated, and it may be years before the city is habitable again.
Most of the damage was confined to the northeast coast of Japan’s main island of Honshu. This is a mountainous region dotted with many small towns and a few medium-sized cities.
Buddhism is very strong in this part of Japan, more so than the rest of the country. There are few followers of Christ in Japan. Only 0.6 percent of the people are evangelical believers. That figure is a national average. The figure for the area hit by the disaster is much lower. There are many towns in the devastation zone that do not have a single church.
May this disaster cause the Japanese to do some serious soul-searching. Ask God to direct the faithful workers who are involved with the relief effort. Pray for more God fearing people to get involved in relief efforts.
