Today we are reading about Cambodian women and girls who are offered jobs, then paid a fraction of the agreed upon wage. God does not tolerate oppression and deceit, be it from the rich or from the poor. This verse shows the imminent judgment of God on those who cheat helpless people who don’t have the power to defend themselves.
Pray that those who exploit the women of Cambodia will repent before God sends His judgment on them. Pray that they will be able to learn about the true and living God so that they will become objects of God’s mercy, rather than objects of His wrath.
“In 2009 Indonesia would no longer allow their women to migrate to Malaysia as domestic workers due to the severe abuse they were put through. This immediately opened up the need for over 35,000 workers from other countries, and Malaysia turned to Cambodia to fill the positions. Since 2009 Cambodian (Khmer) women and girls have been sent to Malaysia to work as domestic workers through legal recruitment companies licensed in Cambodia.”
The above report was given by a Cambodian human rights researcher concerning the slave labor problem among Cambodian workers in Malaysia. Unfortunately, many of the Cambodian “recruitment” companies are unethical. “The Malaysian government promised to give more rights and privileges to the workers. Unfortunately, numerous reports of horrible abuses have continued to come in. Most of the women are forced to work every day for at least 12 hours, often only receiving 100 dollars a month. Their only way out is if their families will pay the recruitment companies at least $1,000 to have them released. These families are very poor and cannot do this.”
The vast majority of Cambodians are Buddhists, and those who are trafficked into Malaysia enter into an Islamic majority country.
Pray that God will intervene and use His servants to rescue Cambodian girls who are trapped as slaves and prostitutes. Pray for His justice and mercy to move throughout Malaysia and Cambodia.
