John 1:46
“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.

One of the unique dimensions of the ministry of Jesus was his identification with the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized. He entered this world in the most humble of circumstances, and was raised in a place which most people had little regard for. Yet he did all this for a good reason. Scripture says He chose the foolish things, the weak things, and the despised things to shame the wise and the strong, “so that no one may boast before him” (1 Cor 1:29). Sometimes we think that in order to reach an unreached people group, we need to first get to the elite in that society. But it could be the opposite. It could be that God’s preferred way of reaching the world is from the bottom up, rather than the top down.

Gorani People

by EJD

Ambling along the ancient walkways of Bologna, Italy, Adnan narrated animatedly to the reporter who was walking beside him. They found a corner table at an outdoor café to continue the rest of the interview. “What is a fine young Gorani man doing in Italy?” asked the well-prepared reporter. Adnan sighed long and hard before he replied, “Among other things, we are a minority in what used to be our own land; we were massacred in our own homes; and our homes are being occupied by Albanians returning after the end of the war settlement. Even though we are Muslims like the Albanians, they view us with suspicion.”
“Please explain why there is this bitter animosity between two people groups that practice the same religion.” probed the reporter. “We are viewed as being sympathetic to Belgrade or must I say, Serbia.”
While a small remnant of Goranis still live, albeit in great fear and trepidation in the pristine region they call home in Kosovo, countless others like Adnan have migrated to European countries like Italy and Germany, where they make a living through their traditional trade of making pastries and sweets.

Pray for healing in the land. Pray also for peace and restoration for the Gorani people, who have still not recovered from the effects of a war fought 13 years ago. Pray that the largely Muslim Goranis will soon be brought into the fold of Christ.
