Daniel 3:17-18
The God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image….

What courage and what insight! Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego teach us at least three lessons as we confront the challenge of principalities and powers raised up against the knowledge of God. First, God is able to deliver His servants from danger and give us great boldness and confidence. Nothing is too hard for Him! Second, He is not obligated to rescue His servants from physical harm; His power is directed by His wisdom. Third, a balanced view of God’s ability and His providence keeps us from timidity on the one hand or presumption on the other.

Pray that our wonderful Lord will teach us to walk in truth and wisdom as we face challenges to His authority.

Yalun Soso Yalunka People of Sierra Leone

by PE

A large river valley in northeastern Sierra Leone contains about 40,000 Yalun Soso Yalunkas in scattered settlements. Round huts with brick walls and cone-shaped thatched roofs comprise most households. On this warm night only the shuffle of a few cattle and the cry of a night bird disturb the heavy silence. Suddenly a shriek pierced the blanket of quietude and was followed by even louder, shriller screams. The evil N’iena had struck again!
Villagers stumbled out of their huts looking about for the source of the awful cries. Hearing the screams they rushed to Fajid’s hut. She held a sobbing daughter who pointed to the bushes just past the clearing. “It was the N’iena, it tried to take me. It could have eaten me,” the girl wailed. Fajid said, “Call for the sorcerer to give offerings, perhaps it won’t come back.” A man in the crowd ran to find him. Once again the sorcerer was called to banish the evil child-stealer who comes in the night.
The mostly Islamic culture of the Yalun Sosos does not preclude old beliefs in witches and N’iena, or nature spirits. The people spend much time placating these frightening entities they believe dwell among them.
