This “banner” suggests that the one word to describe how the Heavenly Bridegroom feels about His bride is “love.” It’s not “judgment,” “obedience,” or “forgiveness.” Oh, how great a love our Savior has bestowed upon us! His is far greater than the love between a man and his wife. As a woman enjoys the loving protection of her husband, so all who know Jesus are under the protection of His love. But what about those who don’t know Him—those who have not heard?
Pray that the Yahar people will respond to the banner of love when they hear.
Sahal’s father threatened him. “Divorce your wife and choose another, higher caste woman.” Later Sahal said that his parents promised him a large amount of money for his wedding if he married a woman of his own caste. He commented, “I could not disown my beloved.” His wife, Zamzam, is from the lower caste Yahar community. This scenario sounds like India with it complicated caste system, but this Romeo and Juliet relationship took place in Mogadishu, Somalia, where Sahal lives. In northern Somalia Muslim groups have a caste system. His family is prominent, and they operate an electronics shop.
Somalia’s lower caste groups, including the Yahar community, are the most socially excluded groups in Somalia. Discrimination occurs in every aspect of Somali life, leaving them among the world’s poorest people. Lower caste groups like the Yahars generally depend on cottage industries, using whatever raw materials are at hand in their region. As would be expected, women and children suffer the most with men often forcibly involved in the on-going violence between hostile tribes and clans. It is hard to see how the gospel can penetrate this people group!
Pray for the good news to strike a chord in Yahar hearts that the gospel message is true and that it is for them. Pray that God’s messengers will be able to reach and touch Yahar hearts for Christ.
